CEEC International: Coalition for Minerals Efficiency (CEEC) recently announced the recipients of its 2022 CEEC Medal in four separate categories, two with winning medals and two with high commendation.
The Medal for Technical research went to John Forster, Adman Olmstead, Xinyi (Wendy) Tian, Darryel Boucher, Matthew GoldBaum, Chris Pickles and Erin Bobicki for their research resulting in the paprt “Microwave Heating Behaviour of Ores and its Application to High-Power Microwave Assisted Comminution and Ore Sorting”. The presentation of the research was offered at the recent International Mineral Processing Congress (IMPC) Asia Pacific 2022.
The CEEC Medal for Operations has gone to Karina Arburo, Jaime Zuniga, Adrian McDonald, Felipe Valdez, Jose Concha and Eric Wasmund for research and resulting paper “Commissioning a HydroFloat in a Copper Concentrator Application”. The findings were presented in the proceedings of the Copper 2022 Conference last November in Santiago.
Receiving a High Commendation for Technical Research: Stephen Morrell for “Helping to Reduce Mining Industry Carbon Emissions: A Step-by-Step Guide to Sizing and Selection of Energy Efficient High Pressure Grinding Rolls Circuits”.
“Although the paper did not receive the CEEC Medal, the Highly Commended recognition highlights the valuable contribution of the researchers to the field of eco-efficient practices,” CEEC said. “The paper provides a practical guide to the selection and sizing of energy-efficient high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) circuits, which can significantly reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in the mining industry.”

Alan Varghese, Sudarshan Martins, Evert Lessing, G. M. Hassan and Ali Karrech received a Highly Commended Recognition for a paper entitled “Pumping Sustainably – Power and Water Consumption in Mineral Processing Plants: Someone Should Care” for the 2022 CEEC Medal for Operations.
The authors are a multidisciplinary team of engineering professionals, with members located in Finland, Australia, and Canada. Formed through a collaboration between Metso and the University of Western Australia, they bring together experience ranging from site development work, R&D pump design, data science, and mining engineering to address the increasing need for a greener mining industry. Their focus is on understanding and developing slurry pumps for sustainable mining applications of the future.
